ONLINE COURSE – VSC Training Course: Introduction to Working on the VSC-3 Cluster, June 9, 2020

This course will be delivered as an ONLINE COURSE for remote participation because of the COVID-19 measures enforced by most European governments.

REGISTRATION is strictly NECESSARY since the details to access the online course will be provided to the registered and accepted attendees only.

Furthermore, accepted participants will be contacted a few days before the course and asked to provide some more data for the hands-on labs that will be needed for user account creation on the VSC clusters. At that time there will also be a short PRE-ASSIGNMENT that has to be completed before the course starts.

This course will be delivered online on: Tuesday, June 9, 2020, 9:00 – 13:00 (ONLINE COURSE)

Please note, the course description below is for the originally planned face-to-face course.

This course is from beginners level (the first steps on a supercomputer) to intermediate level (some experience on VSC-3 or an other compute cluster).

In this course we will help you getting started on the VSC-3 cluster, Austria's most powerful supercomputer. With running and developing software on a supercomputer there are many similarities and fewer but crucial differences compared to your desktop PC. Focusing on hands-on teaching throughout the course, you will immediately try out what you've heard and adapt it to your own needs.

This lecture is equally relevant to those who will merely be running existing software as to those who will develop scientific codes (however, without actually teaching supercomputer programming – if you would like to learn parallel programming, please refer to our MPI- or OpenMP-courses).

    Agenda (preliminary) & Content:

09:00 - 09:15   Supercomputers for beginners: login vs. compute nodes, shared vs. distributed memory
09:15 - 09:30   Connecting to VSC-3 – special topics only: OTPs, passwords, ssh-keys, backup policy
09:30 - 09:50   Module environment and available software, compiling and linking your own code
09:50 - 11:20   Submitting batch jobs to SLURM: partition and QoS, MPI – srun vs. mpirun
11:20 - 11:50   Finding out what your job is actually doing: node access, job control, profiling
11:50 - 12:10   File storage options available & choosing the appropriate one depending on the purpose
12:10 - 12:20   Special types of hardware (GPUs, KNLs) available & how to access them
12:20 - 12:25   Got stuck? – Get support (how to write a support ticket)
    12:25 - 12:30   Wrap-up and next steps
    12:30 - 13:00   Q&A session
13:00 - 14:00   Lunch break (lunch is not included)
14:00 - 16:00   Individual support (on appointment during the morning session only)

You should be able to work on the Linux command line and be familiar with login to a remote Linux machine. Otherwise please take our Linux-course prior to this course.

We suggest that you bring along your own laptop to benefit most from the hands-on exercises.
Please make sure, that Opens external link in new windoweduroam is properly configured on your laptop, so that access to VSC-3 is possible during the course. If you use a Windows laptop please install the following software packages prior to the course: Opens external link in new windowPuTTY and Opens external link in new windowFileZilla or Opens external link in new windowwinscp.

Alternatively, you can also work on one of the Linux PCs available in the course room, especially if this rather corresponds to your normal workflow.

You should work with your own user account on VSC-3 during the course. If you do not yet have an own account we will provide a training user account for the course.
